It sounds like the one on the promo. If it is, you see a close up of Sandra from the shoulders up. It appears to be an older photo and gives the impression that she's just come out of the ocean (actually it may be in the background). Her hair is all wet and hands over and below her shoulders. Her face and body are very white, and she has make-up colours which do not stand out. I hope to scan the cover and make it available within the next week. I got a copy of MCMXC a.D. and have been listening to it pretty steadily for the last four years. I was attracted to the way it SOUNDED like more conventional "dance" music on the surface, but was much more intricately layered and recorded - and I liked the way they mixed different languages and musical styles into the pieces. I was also impressed with the way songs were sequenced on the recordings and the way they made transitions from one song to the next. Aside from the technical aspects of the recording, I found it to be both relaxing and stimulating depending on what sort of mood I'm in - something very difficult to do! (For example, one might get stimulated while listening to Van Halen's "1984", but would probably have trouble relaxing to it! And by the same token, I find it easy to relax to Dire Straits' "Communique," but it's not something I would be likely to get up and dance to.) I also like the feel of openness and space in the recordings. -=Other musical tastes=- Besides Dire Straits and Van Halen, I listen to everything from the Pet Shop Boys to Rush to Marillion to Bruce Hornsby and the Range to Genesis to Pink Floyd and Tony Bennett. I try to keep myself from becoming stale by listening to the same sort of music. -=Employment/Education=- Like one of the other new arrivals (Charles Bonville), I am also a computer science major entering his senior year in college, in my case, the US Coast Guard Academy. I'm minoring in mathematics. For fun I play in the drum and bugle corps and the jazz band, work as part of the lighting crew for plays, and do other strange sorts of things. -=Other factoids=- I like to hike, camp, drive, cross-country ski, and shop for fun. Anyway, I hope I didn't bore anyone too badly... andrew --------------------------------------------------------------------------- It comes down to reality, and it's fine with me,| Andrew Blackburn | 'Cause I've let it slide... |blackbur@dcseq.uscga.edu| -Billy Joel -------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 1995 18:13:20 -0400 From: Jerry Smith Subject: b'tribe To: enigma@yoyo.cc.monash.edu.au Enigma Netters, I got a copy of b'tribe's suave CD today, admittly this is a good cd, but this seems to fall under European Pop/Rock. I don't think this falls in to category that Enigma has created for themselves. I don't know how Deborah Blando stacks up to Sandra, I haven't heard more than this album or seen any pictures of her. Lets get to the positives, I really like the title track, Suave. Some of the instrumentals are similar to Enigmas, but with a Spanish beat. I even find the beat of some old fashion strip shows from my grandfathers era. I find the rest of the album to be really good, Deborah tries very hard to have the seduction voice, and I thinks she really succeeds at it. The Poesia track is very good and so is Yo Quiero. I haven't been home to the continent in twenty some years and my Spanish is very rusty, but I find that I like the album. B-tribe stands for "Barcelona tribe of Soulsters" and unfortunately I cannot tell you who is involved in the group since the "Fiesta Fatal" CD of theirs lists no names. (this is the only CD I have from this group) "Fiesta Fatal" is in some ways similar to Enigma. Actually it is a cross between Gipsy Kings and Enigma To answer to Paul as well who did not care for the weird chanting in "Fiesta Fatal" this chanting is called "Flamenco", the Spanish folk music of the gypsies. Since I was born and raised in Spain I quite like the "Flamenco" interludes of this CD. If there is a Cyberpal out there with more info on B-tribe, please pass it on! >From Dinh I'd also like to know if "Sauve,Sauve" also contains these "Flamenco" interludes and if the "Lullabye" on this CD is anything like or as good as Deep Forest's "Sweet Lullabye". Some more news: I just purchased Mike Oldfield's "The Songs of Distant Earth". This is a very good CD, I recommend it to all Enigma (and Deep Forest) fans. There is an excellent review of this CD on the Enigma web. Gold-Edition in CPH / Other Enigma-items in London To: enigma@yoyo.cc.monash.edu.au Hi, I'm back from my holidays in Copenhagen and London and very glad because I used the chance to get some more items for my Enigma-collection. For those who are interested in completing their collection the shops where I found the following: Copenhagen: ----------- Where? What? * HMV Shop * The CROSS of Changes (Special Limited Edition CD / 24 CT. Gold + Remixes) * CPH Airport * The CROSS of Changes (Special Limited (departure Edition CD / 24 CT. Gold + Remixes) hall) The HMV Shop is located in a shopping-street (pedestrian zone) in the centre of Copenhagen (I don't know the name of the street... :-( ). London: ------- Where? What? * Tower Records * Enigma Video Compile (by Virgin Records Australia) (at Picca- (bundled with 'the CROSS of changes'-album) dilly Circus) * Mea Culpa p.II - Maxi-CD * 'MCMXC a.D.' - songbook (Piano, Vocal, Guitar) * 'the CROSS of changes' - songbook (Piano, Vocal, Guitar) * other Maxi-CDs from the 2nd Enigma-album That's all I found there... I think in this mailing list are some members living in these cities. If they are not interested in buying these items for themselves they could write a message to the list that they're living there, so that other Enigma-fans have the chance to buy the rare items via the people who live in Copenhagen or London. That's everything from me, hope it helps somebody out there... I'm Karen, I'm 31 and I'm a grad student in combined languages (German, French, Spanish, Italian); I'm working at the Center for International Studies on my university. I've love Michael Cretu's music - his own and his productions for others. I have "Invisible Man;" Enigma's "MCMXC.a.D." and "Cross of Changes"...I really ejoy Sandra; I love "Won't run away" and "Invisible Shelter" from her new "Fading Shades"; I also love Hubert Kah, Peter Schilling, Savage, ALphaville, ect. I lived in Germany for awhile, and had a chance to get a lot of great music! I'm hoping to go back next year to study (Berlin) and hope to see Alphaville and any of my other favs live.... I'm searching for a copy of Hubert Kah's 12" "Angel 07" that has several different mixes....has anyone found a copy or has one to sell? If so, please e-mail me. By the way, Gavin, the site is really excellent, but I am having trouble with the link to the Sandra and Hubert Kah pages...keeps giving me a message that it "Cannot find internal anchor"...maybe they aren't done yet? Anyway, it looks like a very comprehensive site: great job! :-) Anyone who wishes to discuss any of the other groups I've mentioned, feel free to e-mail me! I've assembled my entire Enigma collection through that store, including SE discs and out of print Maxi-Singles. Some days the store is nearly empty, some days it is overflowing.. Anything you don't see on the floor can be ordered (it helps if you know as much as possible about what you want before you order) and quite often they manage to find what cannot be found and deliver it within weeks. The music was used while some Norwegian athletes were performing in the background and an announcing text was shown. 2) SVT (The Swedish Broadcasting Corporation) used 'I love you, I'll kill you' while portraiting the american long jumper Mike Powell. So, here I go. NAME Brian Davis AGE 19 WHAT IS IN YOUR ENIGMA COLLECTION I (unlike most of the people here, from what I've seen!) have only the MCMXC a.D. album and The CROSS of Changes album. WHERE YOU FIRST HEARD ENIGMA, AND HOW MUCH A FAN YOU ARE A few years ago, I happened to be listening to the radio late at night when a came across a program called Musical Starstreams, and Sadeness was playing. At the time, though, I didn't catch the name of the song, and it wasn't until about a year later when a friend gave me MCMXC a.D. to listen to that I discovered, "hey! It's that song!" After that, I went out and bought my own. OTHER ARTISTS YOU LIKE Unfortunately, I can't say that I listen to a lot of Enigma-style music (mostly because I don't know what a lot of it is, but I'm sure this group can help me out with that), but I was told that a group called Deep Forest might be something I would like. I also have a part time job working for Babbage's, a software retailer. I was then very recently introduced to more Enigma by a friend who has MCMXCD aD. and Cross of Changes. I am a strong fan in the sense that I VERY much want to find some copies of their CD's. In fact, I would very much like to get my hands on the Limited Edition versions of the albums at just about any cost on the small side of $50. Anyone seen a place that's selling these albums??? Why am I such a huge fan? Well, besides the fact that the music is very beautiful, I am very "attached" to Return to Innocence. The first time I heard it, it became my favorite song. As I listened to it more, I noticed that it gave me the tingly shivers all over. On about the 15th time I heard it, I actually broke down into tears... and then laughed, and then cried some more, just like the song says. I have never had such an incredible reaction to music before. All this emotion came out of me, and I haven't even seen the video. My friend told me about the imagery in the video (which was confirmed in the Enigma FAQ) and I experienced even more emotion when imagining a tree returning to its standing state. Anyway, Enigma means a lot to me... It is very spiritual to me and I was not surprised to read in the FAQ that psychically ill people have been helped by this music. >* Other artists you like Well, that would be a list of many pages... but I do like Erasure, Pet Shop Boys, Information Society, and New Order. I'm a bit of a folkie but i've always had a place in my heart for bigger music ( classical, classical-rock, new age ). When i first heard the wonderful strains of Enigma's gregorian chant, oriental flutes, and gasping women set to a dance beat on the radio I was immediately bowled over. I am deeply moved by this music. The curious blend of sensuality and spirituality, although to som e may be contradictory, has always made sense to me. I consider especially the first album the ultimate love-making music and am delighted when those dramatic moments coincide with the music. The Cross of Changes also speaks volumes to my naturalist/pagan heart. Anyway I'm new to this and I don't want to ramble. Thanks for having me. Some people have had troubles getting on to the new WWW site here in Australia while others have had no problems. I think that the reason for this is the server it is on. The server has a lot of users on it and it is possible that your connection is either timing out or having problems in sending the information to you. For this reason, when it is business hours here you may have troubles in getting on, but when it is after hours you may have no troubles. I am currently searching for other 'homes' for the site and will try and improve the service where possible. In the mean time, please be patient and perhaps try at different times during your day to get on. *** In other news, Vangelis' new studio album is due for release in Australia on October 16. My contact at eastwest records had no other information he could share with me such as whether it is truely a studio album or a soundtrack he is rumored to be doing. I played the movie and the CD at the same time, and found that they were different. On the Preview Channel on cable, SPICE uses Enigma to introduce their adult station. I have heard Enigma in at least a dozen movies this year, most of which, listed Enigma in their credits. One could write to HBO, MAX, SHO and see if they can help with the project. At least to get you started. I only noticed Enigma once on network(ABC) during a news segment. And yes, CNN has also used Enigma for background music. In fact, the piece that ABC was doing was so long, that they actually used two songs from Enigma and they weren't side by side. One song was at the beginning of the album, while the other song was at the end so you knew that they didn't just throw enigma on there and played it. In fact, I tuned out what they were talking about and just listened to the music. And i, personally, use enigma for background music to my videos. Especially when i want to create certain moods. But i find that a lot of times the music is way too overpowering. Perhaps that is why in Boxing Helena they just turned the movie over to the music and let it take over. Anytime that i see Enigma in a movie, news broadcast, advertisement, or whatever, i will let you guys know because i believe that by the turn of the century, enigma may be in more movies than you can possibly count. And i don't just mean documentaries, either. Warmest wishes, T. L. It's very pitiful in Chili she is almost unknown...some people heard "Maria Magdalena", "Secret land", but other female singer have too much publish cover like Bjorg, Gloria Stefan, and some latin singers. Jerry, how can I get some VHS of her in NTSC stereo format? I take 6 month to get "18 greatest hits" (it's a used CD...it's my jewel!). Please answer me ASAP. Bye, cyberpal! You can order stuff from the States and get UPS to ship to you if they service your country. Order it from CD Connection and have it shipped. By the way the prices on the current Sandra CDs here in the states have dropped. Hope this helps. If you can't get them thru CD Connection, drop me some Email and I'll figure out a way to get them to you. >Jerry, I think the same, Sandra's voice is really beatifull and her style is >better than any female singer.
